I’ve been off doing my civic duty. I was one of the lucky 14 (12 jurors and 2 alternates) selected to serve on a jury in Charleston County this week. I started complaining the second I heard my juror number called. Turns out “really not wanting to do it” isn’t a cause for disqualification. I’m going to tell you something you aren’t going to hear that often. It was kind of fun. The case was a simple slip and fall, but watching the two lawyers maneuver through the proceedings was oddly fascinating. It helped that our judge was really cool. She had a good sense of humor and ran a very relaxed court. The other jurors were great and kept me entertained. Plus, it never sucks to be downtown at lunch time in Charleston. In the end, we didn’t get to render a verdict because the parties settled at the 11th hour, but we took an informal straw poll at the end, and I was amazed that 10 out of the 12 jurors had come to the same conclusion. So, if you ever get called in for jury duty, don’t sweat it. It’s not that bad.
