Dr. Melba Ketchum: ‘We have the proof’

Dr. K seen here with her proof.

Dr. Melba Ketchum, the team lead in an ongoing study of possible Sasquatch DNA, made a rare public statement today about the progress of her team’s study. And, whether she intended for this to happen or not, the level of expectations have skyrocketed on both sides of the debate. Claiming to have evidence is one thing, but to actually say, as she did, that they have proof is an astonishing statement that will undoubtedly intensify scrutiny. She’s actually gone beyond saying they have proof. She’s intimated they have “extraordinary proof.” Here’s her statement as reported by Cryptomundo in its entirety.

Ok, for the sake of time (and I hope all of you understand), I will answer everyone publicly here. I keep getting a lot of emails from everyone wanting to know the status of the project. Though I cannot give details or timing, I will assure everyone that all is well and we are continuing to move forward. Good science cannot be forced or quickly completed. If it is not extremely thorough, then it will all be for naught and any paper rejected outright. So, I ask you to be patient and understanding and realize that extreme scientific overkill is required in order to convince a world full of skeptical scientists. “Extraordinary claims require extraordinary proof”. This is what we are doing. When we started this, I thought we would be finished in a few weeks, but instead as Sasquatch are known to do, they threw us curve balls even with their DNA which can be as elusive as they are. Thank goodness we are past that! As a result, we have assembled a renowned team, each of us with our own specialties to make this project “extraordinary”. If everyone will hang in there, I promise it will be worth the wait. We have the proof, now just give us the opportunity to present it in a form that will even convince skeptics. Thanks so much for all of your emails and support. Best wishes to all.

Now, it’s dangerous to read into these things, but I have to offer my opinion on what this statement is really saying. I think Dr. K is preparing us for the very real possibility that the paper won’t be published in 2011. The last release date we had was this fall. Erickson has stated on a number of occasions that the film will be released this fall in conjunction with the DNA analysis. Robert Lindsay has long reported a strained relationship between Erickson and Ketchum, so one wonders if Erickson will split from his previous statements and go ahead and release his documentary ahead of the report if it is indeed delayed again.

  1. It is also useful to look at the perspective of the journal that received The Paper from Ketchum et al. The reputation of the journal is at stake due to the magnitude of the claim and the history of hoaxes. If any weaknesses in the paper are found by the panel of reviewers, those will need to be addressed by Ketchum before the paper will be accepted. It’s not possible to tell which stage we are at. From another angle, think of a prestigious journal like, mmmmm, Nature, that may have received this paper; if they take a pass, they will have missed an opportunity central to their mission of furthering scientific communication. Lots at stake for all.

  2. Exactly: she prepares us for the “possibility” that the paper will not be published in 2011!! It WILL NOT be published this year!! This is the third time she has to announce a delay and each time I find it harder to believe that Ketchum has the competence, clear view and character to convince the scientific community. Not that we misunderstand each other: I wish her all the success in the world – and until now I have defended her work on various BF blogs! But more and more I lose my faith in her integrity as well as her social and intellectual skills – a 50-something woman who puts a picture of her on her facebook page showing her when she was about 35 years old!!
The only hope I have is the fact that Paulides launched his BF Genome Project website about two weeks ago. In my opinion he would not do so when the paper had no chance to be published in the nearer future. Well, of course, this is just a weak reason for hope…
    best regards, Joerg

  3. Do you think Ketchum has an ethical or moral responsibility to at least submit a complete Genome of one certain sample (whether Sierra Kill, Paulides, EP whatever) and place in the Gen Bank prior to even peer-review of her statistical analysis of the many?

Wouldn’t she still have first place? But also putting at a minimum the scientific community and perhaps BF community (and maybe more) that Sasquatches are…what? Homo sapien? Homo erectus? what?

I ask this because of the length of the study. If in 2009 she could identify BF DNA as stated…well, and so on…

It seems the spirit of the magnitude of the discovery would be to invite all the minds possible to review the initial genome and to counsel her as she works through her many samples?

Our collective conscious…our responsibility to say, not shoot BF’s if they are a relic human, “lost tribe”,.or even new primate, does it really matter given the rabid climate of amateur BF Hunting?

The TBRC condoning any member who chooses to shoot? It all seems less about concern for the planet, humanity, etc than a desire to bring forth new (if incomplete) knowledge to solve a scientific mystery in a humanitarian way…

maybe I am just really old school, you know duty and honor…science and law.. I don’t really care for the reality shows..or FB type thing either..

Apparently she knows something and can show it…at least for one individual BF, and Paulides is still saying “human” in his vernacular…

    what’s up?

It is not clear to me in her response that the paper has been submitted, it seemed it still need to be written

The editor of Skeptical Inquirer made some interesting comments on Bigfoot Forums Blog

    • You do make some interesting points. If this is a relic human, there indeed should be a sense of urgency to protect it. I have been uncomfortable with the NDA situation from the beginning. If nothing else, I do believe that the information should be made availabe to everyone in order to structure a proper conservation plan.

  4. check it out, RW. Below is a link to the Am. J. of Phys. Anthr. The list of published articles on topics like humans and primates, especially DNA based studies, coincides with the Bigfoot hominin phenomenon and the purported structure of Ketchum’s work. So Ketchum’s Report is in their wheel house. The link below is to ‘early views’ of articles, so a paper from Ketchum may pop up here. You can register to receive a ping whenever new articles appear.

note: I have no inside knowledge of any kind about the Ketchum Report

    • Thanks for the link, Mitch. I’ll sign up, and monitor their publication.

    • I just hope The American J. for Ph. Anthropology will be the one – they are certainly the world record holders in fast peer reviews:

Rapid Peer Review: average time to first decision just 33 days

      (Quote from their website)

So, potential good news for all folks out there who cannot wait anymore….like me 😉

      Best, Joerg

  5. One year later and still nothing! Surprise! Surprise!
