Second Round of Playoffs – Penn State vs. Buffalo

The second round is here and we have at least one unexpected participant. The story of the playoffs is the Buffalo Bulls. They thrashed the Oklahoma Sooners in the first round and are ready to tame the Penn State Nittnay Lions. Do they still have the magic? Can Turner Gill rally his troops and get them to play over the heads again? It’s the new guard versus the old in this one.

Ohio State Advances

Ohio State Trounce the Red Raiders!

Ohio State Trounces the Red Raiders!

The Buckeyes looked painfully ineffective in the first half of their playoff matchup against Texas Tech, but something got into them in the second half. They opened up the offense and stifled the Red Raiders. They won in impressive fashion. Final score is 38-21. The Florida Gators are next up for the Buckeyes.

Playoff Schedule

The second round of the playoffs starts tomorrow.  I will be posting two games tomorrow and two games on Wednesday.  I’m going to make it a little harder to win to try to simulate a real playoff.  Each game will be open for just four days of voting as oppossed to seven.  In round three it will be two days of voting and then for the championship it will be one day of voting.  So you have to be focused if you want to win.

Gators Win

Gators Chomp Trojans

Gators Chomp Trojans

Score: 55-14

The Trojans from Troy were no match for Tim Tebow and the mighty Florida Gators (or is that the Florida Gators and the mighty Tim Tebow).  It was a contest early on, but the other Gators decided to start playing just for the heck of it, and they game quickly got out of hand.  The SEC champs now await the winner of the Ohio State/Texas Tech game.

Alabama and USC Advance to Second Round

Tide Rolls into Second Round of Playoffs

Tide Rolls into Second Round of Playoffs

Alabama needed two overtimes and a blocked extra point to win over Virginia Tech, 38-37.  An impressive flurry of scoring put Virginia Tech ahead going into the fourth quarter, but Bama pulled some offensive magic of their own in the final three minutes.  Both defenses buckled down and made the other team earn every inch of the 25 yards needed to score in the first overtime. The second overtime saw Alabama score first with one-handed touchdown pass.  The extra point was tacked on, and then came Tech.  A run off left tackle for 25 yards and a score looked like the game was headed for a third overtime, but a bad snap from center on the extra point, gave Alabama’s ends enough time to break through and block the kick.  Game over.  The Tide will play today’s winner, USC.

Trojans Smother Bearcats

The USC/Cincinnati game appeared like it would be a blow out on paper, and appearances didn’t lie in this case.   Cincinnati’s only points came on a snap that flew over USC’s punters head and out the back of the end zone.   Ugly does not begin to describe the magnitude of the Bearcats ineptness in this game.  It’s hard to find anything positive to say when the final score is 72-2.  The Trojans played everyone on their roster.  The starters were on the bench by halftime.  They are well rested for their matchup against the Crimson Tide.

Alabama vs. Va. Tech – Overtime!

Alabama vs. Virginia Tech: Alabama turned up the offensive firepower and managed to tie the game just as time ran out.  The game in in overtime.  Voting is open until 5:00.  Click here to cast your vote and influence the score. Voting closes on 12/20/08.

Games in Progress

Current Play by Play: Texas Tech vs. Ohio State – Yesterday this reporter was getting ready to play the funeral march for the Ohio State Buckeye’s chances at winning a national championship. Today I’m looking for images of Jesus or Mary Mother of God emerging from the clouds above Buckeye nation because miracle of miracles, Ohio State has taken a substantial lead over the Red Raiders from Texas Tech. It seemingly happened in a blink of an eye. The Buckeye’s offensive numbers are as ridiculous as Beany Wells’ name. There’s still plenty of time for Texas Tech to mount a comeback, but hat’s off to Ohio State for at least making a game of it. Click here to cast your vote and influence the score. Voting closes on 12/23/08.

Current Play by Play: Florida vs. Troy: The kicker just kicked a field goal for Florida. A fact that’s significant because it’s the only points that Tim Tebow did not have a hand in. The Trojans still have a chance, but they will have to play out of their minds to take down the Tebow lead Gators. Click here to cast your vote and influence the score. Voting closes on 12/22/08

Current Play by Play: USC vs. Cincinnati: USC is now playing the coaching staff, and they’re wearing blindfolds, to boot. Sadly, the Bearcats still don’t have a chance. Click here to cast your vote and influence the score. Voting closes on 12/21/08.

Current Play by Play: Alabama vs. Virginia Tech: Va. Tech is back with a vengeance. Beamerball has finally reared its ugly, opportunistic head, and 10 blocked punts have turned into points for the Cavaliers. Things aren’t looking good for the Crimson Tide. Nittnay Lions to Take on Upstart Buffalo in Second Round of Playoffs

Penn State Readies for the Mighty Bullalo Bulls in Second Round of Playoffs!

Penn State Readies for the Mighty Bullalo Bulls in Second Round of Playoffs!

Penn State called on the spirits of football’s past, and mounted a crunching comeback against everyone’s favorite darlings of the playoffs, Boise State. In the tradition of the Nittnay Lions of yesteryear, Joe Pa relied on his defense to deliver bone shattering hits, jarring the ball loose from six Boise State ball handlers in the second half alone. The Broncos were uncharacteristically unfocused, and it showed. They couldn’t have played a sloppier game.

Score 46 – 33

Next up for Penn State is the pesky bunch from Buffalo. Can the Bulls keeping riding the wave of emotion that helped them beat the number Oklahoma Sooners?

Current Games in Progress!

Current Play by Play: Texas Tech vs. Ohio State – Ohio State is going down in flames. Tressel is on the sidelines creating a Craig’s List ad to sell his sweater vest because he now considers it the symbol of a complete loser. Amen, Jim! Current Play by Play: Florida vs. Troy: The rest of the Gators finally showed up. Still Tebow has thrown a few TD passes, run for another, returned a punt and kick-off for two more, intercepted a pass for yet another and even got a safety. He is a god, people. Worship him! Current Play by Play: USC vs. Cincinnati: USC has stopped playing to make this one fair. Cincinnati still can’t score. Click here to cast your vote and influence the score. Voting closes on 12/21/08.

Virginia Tech is considering going back to the Gobblers nickname they suck so much (Wait for it… wait for it… there it is. You got it.) Click here to cast your vote and influence the score. Current Play by Play: Penn State vs. Boise State – Say it ain’t so, Joe Pa. Boise State is back in front with a commanding lead. The Nittnay Lions have become the Nittnay Pussy Cats in this one. Bulls Pummel the Sooners – Advance to Second Round

Turner Gill and the Buffalo Bulls Crush the Sooners!

Turner Gill and the Buffalo Bulls Crush the Sooners!

Turner Gill dominated the Big 8 as a player at Nebraska. Apparently the only thing that’s changed is that they added four more teams for him to beat like a drum. His Buffalo Bulls not only took Oklahoma to the woodshed in our playoffs, he tore it down, forced them to rebuild it and took them there again. The game was never competitive. Sooner’s coach Bob Stoops fired everyone including the grounds keeper throughout the course of the game. He reportedly called his old friend & mentor Steve Spurrier at the conclusion of the game for some words of wisdom. The Gamecock coach told him he should have thrown his visor more, and changed quarterbacks at least twice. When he asked his mentor how to get back on the winning track again, Spurrier said he didn’t have a clue.

Bulls win 77 – 23. Next up, the winner of the Boise State/Penn State game.
